London Rajar – Q2/2018

Welcome to Q2/2018 – which covers the period 2nd April – 24th June.

As always there are plenty of ups and downs. Both Capital and Heart have seen some heavy drops in audience year on year – followed by Smooth and LBC, while Absolute, Capital Xtra and Magic are among the winners this quarter. Last time I commented that Magic had been taking a tumble for several quarters but maybe the tide is starting to turn as the station is up 120,000 year on year, and 296,000 quarter on quarter, putting it into third (commercial) place for both Reach and Share.

On the subject of winners, congratulations to Andy Roberts and the team at Kiss – who take the top slot (in Reach). Although it’s been a modest increase of 39,000 year on year, it’s certainly an impressive gain of 138,000 this quarter.

LBC continues to have the highest commercial Share – and for the ninth successive quarter (since Q2/2016).  Despite a year on year drop (although Q2/2017 covered the General Election which gave the station a boost in listening) it continues to be strong during weekday mornings and has also regained much of its dominance of the late-night/overnight hours – especially Steve Allen’s much-lauded 4.00am ‘spike’.

On the subject of speech-based stations some observant readers will notice the absence of talkRADIO from the Reach/Share rankings. From this quarter TR has switched from quarterly to a rolling half-yearly survey period, so it is no longer directly comparable as most London stations are quarterly. However it has, on the revised survey period, a weekly Reach in London of 61,000 and a 0.1% Share.

Previous results for comparison – Q1/2018 and Q2/2017

As always you’ll also find some good, expert, analysis from Adam Bowie and Matt Deegan as well as insightful commentary on the Northern Ireland scene from John Rosborough.
